Moving

February 22nd, 2002 No comments

Okay, as some people have already noticed through the comments on previous posts, there is some talk of me moving. Currently, the only definite thing is that I will be moving. Not 100% sure where yet, nor 100% sure when (“soon”).

Andrea and I have an application in for a place in Manchester, but so far they haven’t been able to reach my current landlady, so they can’t process my application yet. The place is pretty nice, it’s in an apartment complex next to the river. I’m pretty excited about it. It will be such a nice change from the pit I live in now.

Guess who’s locked out?

If you guessed me, you’re right! Derrick was kind enough to lock the door with the dead-bolt, to which I have not a key. He was also thoughtful enough
to turn off his cell phone and go to sleep. I found this all out when I tried
to go home this evening and found myself in the rain outside the apartment.
Needless to say, I am not pleased.

So I find myself instead sitting at work trying to keep myself awake until about 7, when I think I’ll make another attempt at going home. Maybe I’ll sleep
a little, though I really should be awake again at 9 to get ready for work.

In my boredom, I’ve taken another quiz thingy. I’ll use cut again to keep everyone sane.

I Am A: True Neutral Elf Ranger Mage

Alignment:
True Neutral characters are very rare. They believe that balance is the most important thing, and will not side with any other force. They will do whatever is necessary to preserve that balance, even if it means switching allegiances suddenly.

Race:
Elves are the eldest of all races, although they are generally a bit smaller than humans. They are generally well-cultured, artistic, easy-going, and because of their long lives, unconcerned with day-to-day activities that other races frequently concern themselves with. Elves are, effectively, immortal, although they can be killed. After a thousand years or so, they simply pass on to the next plane of existence.

Primary Class:
Rangers are the defenders of nature and the elements. They are in tune with the Earth, and work to keep it safe and healthy.

Secondary Class:
Mages harness the magical energies for their own use. Spells, spell books, and long hours in the library are their loves. While often not physically strong, their mental talents can make up for this.

Messed up state

February 20th, 2002 No comments

Commonwealth actually, which is an indication of just how messed up it is. Anyway, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is threatening to seize my bank accounts, garnish my wages, filing a tax lien, assigning my case to a collection agency, and/or intercepting my federal or state tax refund.

Why?

Because they decided I owed $0.94 more money to them for last year’s taxes than what they told me I owed them (and what I paid.) They also tacked on a $17.41 penalty for not paying the 94 cents. So these threats are over the grand total of $18.35.

I find this funny. Why? Because it probably costs them more than $18.35 in paperwork and time. Governments are great.

Just an update, nothing more.

February 17th, 2002 No comments

Not much to report on. Since my last update it’s pretty much been life as usual. At work I built up a file server for SimPro. It’s a FreeBSD box running Samba, and I got it to do all the nifty file sharing and print sharing stuff. And it’s even an NT domain controller. I’m pretty happy with it.

On Thursday night I cooked dinner for Andrea. Well, she helped quite a bit, but I still like to think I cooked her dinner. We had chicken curry. It was very tasty. I think I’ll have to start cooking more, it was actually pretty fun. Friday night she cooked turkey burgers for me. It was also pretty tasty, though the smoke alarm kept going off while we were cooking, which sucked. We also watched a very odd movie that I can’t remember the title of.

Last night, Jason and I went to see Fellowship of the Ring again. I’ve posted an entry about it over in moviereviews this time, since I don’t think a review from the idiot-teen ridden showing would have been fair.

Oh, and I took a survey. But I’ll save you all from the horror by using a cut.

New Network

February 11th, 2002 No comments

Last weekend was the big network redo for Valvcon/SimPro/IronCastle. It ended up going pretty smoothly. Friday night I worked on upgrading all the servers and routers to FreeBSD 4.5-RELEASE, which went pretty well. On Saturday I messed up one of the 4.5 upgrades by over-writing the sendmail.cf with a standard one, when we needed one with cyrus support. Luckily, I found a config from the last time I broke sendmaill/cyrus, so it was okay. :)

Saturday, everything got recabled and reconfiged, and it ended up pretty much just working, which was good.

Sunday, I rested.

Today, we found out that two of the network printers wern’t working. One had an old access list on it that was preventing the new IP space from talking to it, and the other one managed to get the wrong IP from dhcp somehow. But it’s all working now, and so I am happy.

Now I get to do fun stuff, like look into Postfix/Courier to replace Sendmail/Cyrus (I hate sendmail, and I hate cyrus), and other neat things. Should be interesting.

Idea

With the network rework coming up this weekends, I wonder if Dave would let me put my old computer on one of the server nets so I could have a server all my own…. Hmm…

Broken Motherboard

February 5th, 2002 No comments

Okay, my doomed motherboard is now on it’s way back to mwave.com, where it will be tested. Assuming it fails for them like it failed for me, I should have a new board within a few days. yay!

In other news, I opened a NetFlix account today. It’s got a lot of anime and stuff that’s hard to find in local stores, and is expensive to buy. I figure it will work out fairly well.

That’s about it.

Oh, and I heard something about some team winning something yesterday, but I’m fairly sure it’s not important.
