Coming Together

March 25th, 2002 No comments

Apartment things are beginning to pull together. Andrea moved her stuff in on Friday, so it’s beginning to look like a furnished apartment.
We’re getting the new entertainment center tomorrow. Unfortunately, the
one my dad gave me was too small for the TV I wanted. :( I got my cable
modem and cable router/wap last week, just need to give AT&T a call to
get the ball rolling on getting that hooked up now.

Also, Big Dave ordered me a laptop today, I should have it tomorrow.
It’s a Sony GR Series with a Pentium III-M 1.13Ghz, 256MB of RAM, 30GB
HD, and a 15” screen. Also go the port replicator for it, which I plan
to use while it’s at work as a replacement for my desktop. It should be
slick. This will be the first time I’ve had a laptop that isn’t at least
3 years out of date. :)

Geeky!

Feeling geekier than usual today. Beginning to think about hacking my I-Opener, which has been sitting in a bag in my room for at least a year
now. I’d still like to turn it into an MP3/Ogg-playing alarm clock,
though if I want network connectivity I’ll have to think up of
something. I’d do wireless, but the only expansion on it is USB, and to
the best of my knowledge there are no drivers for 802.11b USB devices in
NetBSD, FreeBSD, or even Linux.

Mostly Moved

March 11th, 2002 No comments

I am now mostly moved into the new apartment. All the major furniture is over there, and most of my stuff in boxes. All that’s left is some boxes
from the kitchen, microwave, toaster oven, television, monitor, and a few
other odds and ends. I plan to get most of that done tonight. Thanks to
Jason (jtn) and Dave (absinthexl) for helping in the move.

It’s great being in a place with working plumbing and without 3 month-old
dishes in the sink. And no more D’r’k, the Slackodemon of Lyndeborough,
Tenth Circle of Hell.

Work and Moving and Stuff

March 6th, 2002 No comments

Been busy since my last post. Andrea and I were approved for the apartment and signed the lease last Friday. We started to move some stuff in on Sunday. I plan to get most of my furniture over on Saturday, with the help of Jason (jtn) it shouldn’t be too bad. It’s a pretty nice place. I snapped some pics with my camera on Friday and posted them here.

At work, we got one of our test machines all together and running, and the voice interface software is working better than usual. Yesterday we installed all the latest stuff at the hydro plant, and it’s running under the SC’s control. It seems to be doing pretty well. Gotten more complaints about the way the voice sounds, but there isn’t much I can do about it. We use festival to to text-to-speech, and we’re barred from using a lot of voices due to license issues. Ah well.

Oh, and I finally updated my page to it’s new style. It’s not really very different at all, but I added some sections, like one on my computers and my movies, and did a few refinements. I like it, and would like feedback on it. I don’t think it’ll work well in older browsers, like Netscape 4. Also, there may be text-size issues in IE 5. Works great in Mozilla and IE6 though.

I-Opener Lives!

March 3rd, 2002 No comments

Well, I finally have the I-Opener running Gentoo Linux. It turned out that I couldn’t install Jailbait on the SanDisk unless I modified the kernel that came with Slackware, which I tried to do, but the new kernel wouldn’t boot. So I ended up just pulling the drive again, hooking it up to my main PC, and installing the stage3 Gentoo tarball from Knoppix. It worked out pretty well, but now the poor I-Opener has to upgrade all the packages that are installed, which is going to take a while. In the mean time, I’m using it as a spare terminal to IRC from while I play Counter-Strike.
