Aliens are neat too, as is CS

It’s been a week since my last post, and not much has been going on. Last Tuesday, Andrea and I decided to go to Methuen to see Men in Black 2 at 11pm. We decided that somewhat randomly around 10. I thought it was pretty good, not great, and not as good as the first one, but still fairly entertaining, and probably better than Reign of Fire.

I’ve been doing a little bit of wardriving with my laptop, since I got dstumbler installed. I picked up a bunch of AP’s on the way home from work, much more than I was expecting, since 101 isn’t exactly packed with companies. For some reason I can only use the card with dstumbler in prism2 monitor mode, anything else doesn’t pick up anything. I assume this means it can’t actively probe for AP’s, just look for ones that are broadcasting themselves. Ah well.

On Saturday, Matt, Jason, and I played CS for a while on the F.o.R servers again. We did well. Matt has some more details in his journal. Jason and I also updated Hindenburg to start using Maildir instead of mbox for mail, and started using courier-imap for IMAP and POP3 service. It seems to be working well, and I haven’t heard any complaints yet.

Yesterday Andrea and I went down to Boston to find me some nice clothes for use in New York. We went to one store and she made me try on stuff for what seemed like hours. I have no clue how long it actually was. We eventually settled on a fairly nice shirt and pants and belt and shoes. It was horrifically expensive.

Tonight I’m heading over to Nick’s house to help him install FreeBSD on his laptop. Hopefully it’ll be smoother than the install on my laptop, which was a pain. Matt’s supposed to be there too. Should be a good time.

Thursday morning I leave for NYC with Andrea and her parents. I’ve only ever been there for a few hours at a time before, mostly in a convention center. It should be interesting. I kindof wish I had an iPaq or something so I could go warwalking, but perhaps that’s a little too geeky. I’m bringing my laptop with me, and hopefully I’ll be able to update here each day.

Oh, and anyone tried that blue Pepsi yet? What’s it like?

Bunches o’ Stuff

Been pretty busy since I last posted. Seems like I’ve been out doing stuff nearly every night in the past week. Unfortunately, I no longer
remember what I did on most nights. I know last Wednesday, Matt, Andrea,
and I went to Boston Billiards for a bit. I used to be pretty good at
pool, but I really sucked that night. On Thursday, I think, we played
mini-golf with Jason, since apparently his drinking buddies ditched him
or some-such. He’s got a nifty tablet PC now that he uses for war-driving.
On the way back from Max’s he picked up 5 AP’s.

On Friday, Andrea and I went to see K-19. It’s the story of Russia’s first (I think) nuclear powered sub with nuclear weapons. Basically they
head out, do some tests, everyone thinks the captain is mean, then
everything goes wrong, and it turns out the captain is a good guy after
all who was considering the fate of the world and not just his boat. I
thought it was good, but Andrea seemed to not be very impressed.

Saturday night, Andrea went to babysit some of her cousins overnight, and I went off to SimPro to play network games with Matt, Jason, Dave,
and Mike. We played CS for a while on one of the F.o.R servers, and for
a while it was four of us GK! against 4 FoR. We did pretty well,
considering we’re just a bunch of people and they’re a real clan that
plays matches and stuff. Later on we played some good old-fashioned
Half-Life Deathmatch. I think I won 2 of 3, Dave winning the other.

On Sunday, Andrea and I went shopping for some food and stuff. I got the tools and wire I need to get the speakers where I want them in the
living room, and we got enough food at Sam’s to last a month. We meant
to clean the apartment, but we ended up going out for Chinese food
instead. We’re going to try and clean up a part of the apartment each
night this week, so it’ll be all clean by next weekend. No real reason
for it, just that it’s a mess and should be clean.

In other news, I’ve gotten a logo from Matt. I know Mike is working on one as well, but I haven’t heard much out of him about it. Andrea claims
that she’ll make one that’s better than everyone else’s, but she won’t
make it for me.

I think I have everything I need to upgrade the TiVo. I found a cable at work that should do nicely, and it turns out the knife that Andrea gave
me for my 20th birthday has the #10 and #15 Torx bits that I need. I
hope to get that done one night this week.

Dragons are neat

Last night I went with Andrea, Matt, Dave, and Ryan to see Reign of Fire. I think it was a pretty good movie, not a great movie, but by no means a
bad movie. The dragons look good, the destroyed cityscape looks good,
the castle they all hide in looks good. The acting isn’t bad. The one
part that really really really sucks is the ending. I don’t want to give
it away, but you see it coming a mile away, and there isn’t a twist in
sight. Just boom, it’s over, everyone go home and be happy.

Earlier this evening, Andrea, Jason, Dave, and myself went to play mini
golf at Max’s again. Once again, I rule the day with the best score of
47 (3 over par). Dave came in with 48, Jason with 49, and Andrea with
56. I may be wrong on those, but that’s the best I can remember. Fun was
had all. We then wandered to Bickford’s for a post game drink ( diet
coke, coffee, water, and water) and then it was off to home, where I now
write this.

In other news, I’ve recently been working on a new design for the main
Chocobo.cx page, since the current one sucks.
You can see my work so far here. One
thing I’m having trouble with is the logo. I suck at designing logos.
So, I hereby start the Chocobo.cx Logo Competition. Anyone can enter,
logo should be nice looking, perhaps working in a picture of a chocobo
or something. I don’t know. Images should probably be in PNG. I’d prefer
something banner-ish, but do whatever, I’ll hold voting and stuff later.
The prize is a $10 Gift Certificate to Borders. You can submit images
via email to me.

I whipped up a little comments system for my site. It’s still in the Development Area, since I want to do some
testing and get some feedback before I put it on the main page.
Basically it allows people to leave comments on any page in my site.
Play with it, tell me what I should fix/change/improve.

Gifts and Site Changes

Since my last posting, I’ve gotten a few more birthday gifts. My mom gave me a gift card to WalMart, which I used part of to buy some chairs for the deck and a fan. My dad gave me a card with some cash in, as did my grandparents. Andrea’s grandparents gave me a gift certificate to a restaurant in Manchester. I think that just about sums it up. I hope I didn’t forget anyone.

I’ve been doing a little more work on my homepage, and think I’ll move the new code over soon. There’s no big visible changes, but a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff. Andrea suggested I add a guestbook, but that seems somehow cheesy to me. It got me thinking though, and I came up with the idea to have per-page comments, kindof like LJ’s per-post comments. Not sure if it’s a good idea or not yet, but I think I may code it up anyway and see how it works.

Oh, and I posted the pictures from my birthday party, you can view them here.

Yay! Birthday for me!

Well, it’s my birthday! Yay for me!

Andrea gave me my presents at midnight. She gave me a GameBoy Advance, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, an Invader Zim cell phone cover, and UHF on DVD. I am very very happy with all my gifts. I was really surprised by the GBA, wasn’t expecting it at all.

Monday night, Andrea’s parents took me out to the Olive Garden in Manchester with Andrea. They gave me a Godzilla 2000 on DVD and a $50 gift certificate to Best Buy. I already used part of it to by a CD case. I think I’ll use more of it on a rechargable battery pack for the GBA. Jason has a nice one with a cradle.

Wednesday night, we’re getting some of my friends together (sounding like Jason and Matt at the moment, Nick skipped town and Dave is feeling ill) to watch movies and play games and generally hang out. Should be a fun time. On the 4th, Andrea and I are heading over to my mother’s house.

Strange, I don’t feel any different now, but the government thinks I suddenly gained the ability to drink… Not another magic birthday till 25 when my car insurance goes down. I guess 21 is the last really special government birthday.
