Loft Weekend!

February 23rd, 2004

So, finally made it to up to the Loft this weekend. It’s like a geek paradise, computers and wiring and stuff all over the place. They’ve even got an old Asteroids arcade machine. Didn’t really do much in particular while I was up there. Played a bunch of Soul Calibur 2, working to unlock features because they lost their memory card, and beating the crap out of Loki and RavenFish. Also got to play a bunch of Cube games, includning Pac-Man Vs., which is nearly cool enough for me to run out and buy a Cube. Basically, it’s multiplayer PacMan, using a linked GBA to control PacMan, and the other players controlling ghosts on the TV. Whoever catches PacMan gets to trade with that player, and becomes PacMan. It’s great.

Ken also brought up his Firefly DVDs, which we spent some time watching on Saturday night. It was a lot better than I expected it to be. Kindof reminded me of a cross between Red Dwarf and Brisco County Jr. (am I the only one out there that still remembers that show?)

Also, maybe it’s just me, but Loki kindof sounds and acts a lot like Brodie from Mallrats. Weird.

LJ Friend Graph 2.0

February 20th, 2004

LJ Friend Graph So, I’ve been doing a little bit of work on the LiveJournal Friends Graph script, and now it does coloring of your friends based on how many interests you have in common. Also, communities are now shown as rectangles, and syndicated journals are octagons. I think it’s looking pretty good at this point.

If anyone out there would like a graph made, just drop me an email, I’ll make the graph and mail it back to you.

Far too much geekiness going on

February 20th, 2004

So, I broke down yesterday and ordered the new Clié off of SonyStyle. It should ship early next week, so hopefully I’ll have it by next weekend. It probably wasn’t the best use of the money, but I’ve been in a toy buying mood recently, and I think that should take care of it for a while. I think I just need to convince myself that I’m broke again, so I stop spending money.

Speaking of which, I’ve found another thing that I’m considering buying, the Flash2Advance Ultra. It’s a GBA cartridge that you load ROM images into. They’re kindof expensive, but it would probably pay for itself in 3-4 games. Not terribly legal though, if I get ROM images for copyrighted games. (And if I don’t, what’s the point?)

Also, heading up north this weekend to the Loft to play console games and generally be a geek. Current plans include helping some people out with installing Linux onto various devices, and setting up an OpenMosix cluster to serve as an LTSP server. Should be a good time.

Thinking of a new PDA

February 18th, 2004

Sony Clié PEG-TJ37 Well, I’ve been thinking of replacing my current Sony Clié PEG-N710C off and on for a while now, and given that it lost it’s mind unexpectedly yesterday, wiping out some data that I didn’t really want to lose, I started looking for a replacement. I came across the PEG-TJ37, pictured at left, which I’m now giving serious thought to.

It’s got the same size screen as the N710C, but it’s got a built-in camera and 802.11b networking. The camera isn’t all that great, only shoots at 640×480, but that’s fine for just taking quick snapshots of stuff when it happens. The 802.11b networking would be very cool to have, being able to check my email or do a little web browsing when I get bored and happen to be in range of an open access point. There are even SSH clients available for PalmOS that would allow me to check on my servers and stuff.

I’ve got at least a few days to think about it, since the TJ37 isn’t released until Monday. That may be enough time to talk myself out of it, not sure though.

Hallmark Day Weekend

February 16th, 2004

Had a pretty good weekend, despite it being Valentine’s Day. I was originally thinking I wasn’t going to have anything to do, so made plans to head up to the Loft to hang out with the ninjas, play video games, and whatnot. Instead we had a bit of an Anti-Valentine’s Day get-together on Friday night with Amanda, Dan, Delia and Tim. We played some Jenga and just generally hung out at the apartment. Dan mentioned doing a movie night at his place sometime, which would be cool.

Saturday I spent most of the day working on Shadow, the HTPC, so that Delia could watch some of the episodes of Invader Zim that I’ve got in DivX. It’s at the point now where it outputs to the TV and can play stuff, but overscan is still having issues (apparently nVidia broke it in one of their driver versions) and I need to get the remote working again. Picked up Delia from work in the evening, hung out at her place for a bit, and ended up heading to one of the pizza places downtown to meet [info]angry_amy and some of her friends. That was rather odd for me, since she was quite drunk. Cool to meet new people though. Hope to meet them again when they’re sober sometime.

Today has been pretty quiet. Worked on Shadow and Terra a bit, and have been thinking of doing some work on the I-Opener, but haven’t gotten that adventurous yet. Maybe I’ll save that for another weekend. Did go out for a bit to grab dinner with Tim and Ben at KFC, mostly to annoy Amanda for a bit. Also swung by Wal-Mart and picked up Metroid: Zero Mission for GBA. Played it a little bit so far, seems to have been done very well. I’ll write up a review later on, maybe.

mmmm OK

February 10th, 2004

Two quick little things this morning. Loki pointed me to an interesting post on NADD which describes me far too well. Just take a look at some of my screenshots as proof.

Also, things are going to be OK.
