Electrical Issues

June 25th, 2005 2 comments

Old building wiring is such a pain. Near as I can tell, our floor has 5 circuits, one dedicated for the washer dryer, then 4 that are apparently used at random around the floor. Somehow, I think we managed to do something very bad to one or two of them. Earlier this evening, we had two air conditioners running (one in bedroom, one in living room), two computers running (same room, but one powered from the other bedroom), and Delia attempted to make nachos in the microwave, which apparently put something over the top, and blew at least one circuit. Here’s the weird part; resetting the breakers in the basement did nothing. They weren’t even tripped when I went down there. We have no power in the bedrooms or the dining room/kitchen. We do have power in the front half of the living room, one plug on the outside wall of the dining room/kitchen, the bathroom, and the pantry/kitchen. I was only able to determine that one of the breakers actually does anything.

I really have no idea what’s wrong with it at this point. I’m guessing either something in the panel fried (though it’s brand new, installed just after we moved in) or some of the wiring along the way cooked itself.

At least we still have one A/C working, so we’re not cooking in here, and I managed to use some heavy duty extension cords to get my computer, the cable modem, and the router back up. Not going to leave them up though, since I have no idea what’s going on with power at the moment.

Overall, today has sucked.

Hydrogen Cars

June 22nd, 2005 No comments

Last night, I was reading an article on Honda’s latest hydrogen fuel cell car. It sounds like the technology is almost ready to hit production, with decent performance, and reasonable range (about 130 miles per tank.) They covered a lot of info about the fill up process, involving connecting a grounding cable to the car and touching the pump before disconnecting the fill hose to prevent static sparks from igniting anything.

I’m left wondering though, what happens when one of these things gets in an accident? They’ve got two tanks of hydrogen compressed to 5000 psi when full. Seems to me like that could be sortof dangerous, you know?

Graduations and Slacking

June 20th, 2005 No comments

I really should get back into the habit of updating this thing more often, though I’m not sure I want to write much till I figure out what I want to do with my LiveJournal. I suppose I could write a plugin for WordPress to cross-post, but I haven’t really felt motivated to do that yet, though WP’s plugin API looks to make such a task a lot easier, providing hooks at publish time, unlike MT, where I had to do things at build-time.

Anyway, not a whole lot going on at the moment. Friday night we went to Amanda’s graduation party with Melody. We got there kind-of late, after a roving thunderstorm kind-of killed the bonfire, so we just played a little Guilty Gear Isuka and a lot of Apples to Apples before taking a wandering route back to Melody’s place to drop her off.

Delia and I then wasted all of Saturday playing World of Warcraft. She’s got a level 25 Tauren Druid, and I was questing with her on my 24 Undead Warlock. It was fun, though we did completely waste the day away. I did manage to install Ubuntu on Delia’s new-to-her laptop, a Gateway Solo 2500. It’s not a bad little laptop, though it’s battery life seems to be pretty short. Ubuntu appears to be running fine, though I have yet to get audio to work properly. I never have much luck with ISA-based soundcards.

Sunday was Delia’s cousin’s graduation party. Delia left before I got up (I stayed up to late fiddling with her laptop and playing WoW) and I only managed to get there for the last half hour or so. We then met up with Melody at Taco Bell for lunch and where we bore witness to the aftermath of a series of stupid events involving a purse. It’s kind-of involved, and I don’t feel like typing it all out right now. We then went out separate ways, Delia and Melody back to the apartment to hang out for a while, and I off to my weekly D&D game. I’m tempted to start writing about events from the game, but I don’t think many people would be interested. Perhaps I should start a category for it. Anyway, after game we all met up again for the traditional self-inflicted punishment of eating at Denny’s. I really need to stop doing that, as I’m feeling ill enough not to go into the office today. I think I should just stick to a bagel or something next time.

Switched to WordPress

June 13th, 2005 1 comment

Well, once again I’ve switched the software that powers my journal. If anyone’s been keeping track, I started out with just LiveJournal, then switched to MovableType with a LiveJournal crossposter. Then I switched to Blosxom, because MT went all commercial on us. Blosxom was cool and all, but I just felt like going for something a bit cleaner, so I’m giving WordPress a spin.

So far it’s been pretty easy to setup and customize. It only took an hour or so to smash their default theme into my page layout, though I still need to fix a bunch of the secondary pages. Also, I haven’t found any kind of LiveJournal crossposting yet, so I might end up writing my own plugin for that. Or I might just give up on it, even though LJ seems to be the way most people read this junk.

Hopefully it’ll get me posting a bit more often again, too.
