So, with the Nikon Coolpix 5700 not working again, I’ve been giving some thought to getting a new camera. The most direct replacement to the 5700 appears to be the P5100, 12.1 megapixel, 3.5x optical zoom, same basic form factor as the 5700, though smaller, and without the flip-out, rotating LCD (this feature doesn’t seem to exist on current models anywhere.)
Although, I’m thinking of going for a digital SLR instead. I’ve always kindof wanted one, but I don’t feel like I know enough about photography and optics to make an informed decision on an SLR at this point. I’ve been eyeing some of the lower end bodies, like the Nikon D40x or the Canon Rebel XTi, both of which are available in a starter kit sort of deal with a lens. But I’m not really sure what brands are good or what I should look out for. Any input?
Spent last weekend out in Ohio for my grandparents’ 60th anniversary. Drove out there with my mom on Friday, took just about 12 hours to make the drive going out I-90. The anniversary party was on Saturday. I had a pretty good time. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a lot of my family, so it was good to see people again, though I went in to my anti-social mode with all the people around. My Nikon was acting up again, so I don’t have any pictures, which kindof sucks.
On Sunday, Jason and I had planned to meet up in Dayton at the National USAF Museum. Unfortunately, Jason’s fuel pump died just outside of Indianapolis. I decided to drive out there to see him anyway. We ended up going into Indy to grab some food, then we went to a Fry’s, since we don’t have any of those up here.
Overall, not a bad trip. A lot of driving in a short period though. Ended up putting a little over 2000 miles on the Prius, so I’ll be taking it in for its 5k service this weekend. Don’t think I’ll be doing anymore road trips for a bit. I think I’ll be flying next time.
Been making a few changes to my website over the past few days. Probably the most notable is the addition of the reCAPTCHA, a new CAPTCHA system that does useful work as a byproduct of fighting comment spam. The first link has a full description of the system, but basically it shows two distorted words, one is known to the computer, and one from a scanned text that the computer doesn’t know. When the human enters the known word correctly, it’s assumed they entered the unknown word correctly too, and one a number of humans agree on an unknown word, it’s considered to be identified.
The other change is a bit of reorganization of my domain. I’ve moved my weblog off over to weblog.2bithacker.net, and my gallery over to gallery.2bithacker.net. The old locations are setup to redirect to the new, so it’s probably not all that noticeable. I decided to go with this arrangement as I feel it gives a bit better separation and organization to things, and it was easier now that all my stuff is running in a jail on Hindenburg.
